Neiman Group Nominated for 2007 PRNews Platinum Award
HARRISBURG, PA (September 21, 2007) - Neiman Group today announced its public relations program for the Pennsylvania Department of Health's "Switchers Anti-Tobacco Campaign" was selected as a finalist for a PRNews Platinum Award. Neiman Group, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to develop and place an op-ed piece from Pennsylvania State Dentist, Dr. Howard Tolchinsky will be recognized as a finalist for the prestigious national public relations award to be announced October 16 at the Grand Hyatt in Midtown Manhattan.
The op-ed communicated an important anti-tobacco message warning current smokers and smokeless tobacco users that there is no such thing as a safe tobacco product. The piece was developed in response to findings that a growing number of smokers were switching to smokeless tobacco products or "chew" as an alternative nicotine source when they could not light up a cigarette in public places.
"Our strategy was to have the 'Switchers' message hit during peak media coverage of the high-profile smoking ban legislation being considered by Pennsylvania lawmakers," said Kim Lehman, vice president of public relations at Neiman Group. "The talk of potential smoking bans had the more than two million smokers in Pennsylvania thinking about alternative delivery systems for their nicotine fixes. Our research revealed smokers would first turn to smokeless tobacco products when they couldn't smoke at work or in public places."
"This piece aggressively addressed smokers with strong evidence of the deadly oral health risks associated with smokeless tobacco, backed by the highest ranking oral-health official in the Commonwealth," said Rick Dunlap, senior public relations account executive at Neiman Group. "Editors statewide were eager to run this powerful message from a notable expert, resulting in nine newspapers delivering our message to more than six million readers all across the state."
Pennsylvania Department of Health and Neiman Group will be competing against Deloitte and Hill & Knowlton, Nintendo and GolinHarris, Siemens Medical Solutions & Coyne Public Relations.
"If we take home the platinum, this will be the second PRNews Platinum Award our agency has received for our social marketing work with the Pennsylvania Department of Health," said agency President Tim Reeves. "But as they say in Hollywood, it truly is an honor just to be nominated!"
